Our team recently volunteered at Borough Market as part of a community initiative with Plan Zheroes, our chosen local charity. This organization collects fresh produce from market vendors and distributes it to local charities that serve the community. We arrived just before the market’s 5 pm closing time to set up collection tables and weighing scales, then set off to various vendors to collect donations of unsold items. Many vendors generously contributed fresh fruits, vegetables, bread, and even leftover risotto. We weighed and recorded each donation, noting which vendor had contributed what items. The collected produce was then divided among three recipient charities, including Foodconnect and Oasis foodbank. Our team assisted in carrying items to cars and loading them onto bicycle trailers for distribution. It was truly humbling to witness the substantial amount of food that would have otherwise gone to waste, now being redirected to feed those in need within our local community. This volunteer experience was extremely rewarding for our team, and we’re eager to continue working with Plan Zheroes in the coming months, exploring further opportunities to serve and make a positive impact. The generosity of the vendors and the efficiency of the collection process demonstrated the powerful effect that initiatives like this can have on reducing food waste and supporting those facing food insecurity in our area.
